Algebra is a form of math used to solve problems. In fact, Algebra was created to solve every day problems that merchants encounter. Algebra uses constants and variables. Variables are symbols that represent different values when used in different equations.

Algebra covers a huge part in pure mathematics. One of the interesting part is Number Theory which is taught normally in universities.

The part you referred is called arithmetic which is taught in lower level grades.
