I just advised to use VFD (variable frequency driver) if he/she need to control a AC motor.
I have answered that question with my previous experience at that time. Since we all knows that
correction and integrity of the answer is completely based on the level of experience when
it was answered. Since that time I just only familiar with, AC induction motors , synchronous
motors and shaded pole motors. That answer still compiles with those three motors.
But in the AC world I have heard another motor type called "commutator motors". Most importantly
they are brushed motors. They could be designed to work with both DC and AC no matter, specifically
known as Universal Motors.
Where in the case of commutator motors and Universal motors I'm wrong, it could be nicely
controlled with PWM method and in phrase clipping method.[where we could use angle clipping to
control speed of induction motors up to some extend , but not complete direct control].
