IRC channel to lankatalk or clubsrilanka?

Post by Enigma » Sun Jul 31, 2011 5:53 pm

Hi guys

As you know ROBOT.LK had a chat room called lankatalk. But its not currently functional. So I suggested to use an IRC channel for this (check this post https://robot.lk/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2676). Neo ask me to open a discussion regarding this. So here goes

Ok IRC aka internet relay chat is another method for internet based real time text messaging. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels. IRC was created in 1988. Client software is now available for every major operating system that supports Internet access. As of April 2011, the top 100 IRC networks served more than half a million users at a time, with hundreds of thousands of channels operating on a total of roughly 1,500 servers out of roughly 3,200 servers worldwide. These are taken from Wikipedia. So I’m not going explain more on this. If you want to know more about this please visit
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat for more details

for testing purposes I have created a simple IRC channel in http://www.mibbit.com/. Mibbit is a we-based IRC chat client and I'm connecting this to an IRC server called irc.uk.mibbit.net
Channel Name is : #ECTestChannel

To log in to this first visit https://cbe002.chat.mibbit.com/ .

Then as you can seen in the below image, Add a unique nick name and a channel name( in this case the channel name should be “#ECTestChannel”). Then click “connect”

You will be direct to the “ECTestChannel” chat room where you can chat in public/private.

Also some people tend to use their own irc server. It gives so much flexibility. Even they can add IRC bots to automate certain tasks. Below is an IRC chat server which can be run in windows and Linux.

IRC works with commands. Some of these command details are included in this site.

I think this is another option for lankatalk/clubsrilanka.

Thanks

Excellent explanation. Enigma as always made a brilliant effort on putting it altogether. REP+
Guys, please add your ideas and suggestions. Just don't say yes or no which is useless ;)

Saw this soon after Enigma posted but couldn't read well. And didn't completely read now too ;) Will read and definitely would be reading if i get a problem with IRCs ;)

I only have used 2 IRCs and knew what it is and mostly its name :)

And I have already heard that there is some things with Linux too.

And in Linux groups like Ubuntu i have seen their official IRC channels and they have said that ask questions via them. I tried to use one, for that I had to add that channel link to a web based client and had to do more so i didn't use it :) I even don't remember what I had to do exactly so my saying could be wrong too :)

I was typing that much oops i can't this one, but almost was going to do. If the edit option was disabled I couldn't have said this. :)

By the way Great post man. :)

Read some info from here http://help.austnet.org/viewfaq.php?q=3.
Before we go too far, an IRCd can cost you a lot of money. An IRCd hosting a modest 100 users can easily clock up over 1GB of traffic per month. If you offend some nasty person, who in return launches an ddos attack on you, expect, oh, several GB per hour. Be sure you know what you are getting into, and how much excess bandwidth might cost you.
Sounds a bit scary ;)

Lets work on all prod and cons and see how it matches us the most.

Are you guys happy with the old chat script? We didn't see much activity there so we thought it is useless to run :?:

If we could find any chat service with P2P support, it is going to be less expensive. I am not sure if there exist anything like that. Skype is P2P. But I think we still need a server for user account management and authentication. This is just an idea. :)

Seems useless. It is going to need a standalone application.

Previous chat service was AJAX based and I agree with Nipuna it was sometimes too slow. I'll install it once again to see whether it works okay on the new server. I'm sure there will be a performance increase. The reason I omitted LankaTalk was due to lack of traffic. May be we will have to give it a nice design and add more features.

Neo,
If you can intergrate a InstantMessaging system here, it will be very usfull than PMs. normally I don't like dadicated chat sites because they eat our time.
