Does anyone know of any 5V SMPS regulator circuit?. It should be fairly easy to build and should be at least about 70% (or more) efficient.
The reason I am looking for one is that I think a 7805 regulator will waste lots of energy if i use it with a 12V input.

BTW, Bulding a SMPS isn't a easy work (as I think). I've used mobile phone chargers to get 5V suppy easily, only costs LKR150

I basically looking for a modern DC/DC voltage regulator chip. I want to build a portable charging station/power supply for using when I am away from the for more than a day.
Linear voltage regulators do their work by wasting excess power as heat. I do not want to waste energy, when I am away every watt counts. . On the other hand, wasting energy is sin.
Those chargers that you can buy for LKR150 does not even have a linear voltage regulator. The voltage drops when the power draw is high. That's why i need a regulator to stabilize.

the simplest way to build a SMPS is how neo told. But read fully the chips docs before you buy it.
However if you are using ripple devices like servo motors driectly drawin current from it then
that single chip poor man's quick and dirty home-made SMP won't work either.
Then I suggest to use AT power supply. Search on the internet how to get power from
AT power supply.
Just curious,For what you need 5V power supply? Are you going to weld with it? (btw at least you need
48Volts to get a proper welding spark,still the gap will be too small). Then you can use 3 car battries for
that. warning and caution , a mistake with car battries will burnt your face or resultant magnetic field
will suck your blood iron out of ya body
