UPS Battery

Post by Nimalkad » Thu Feb 25, 2010 6:14 pm

I am using a 600 VA UPS with my PC. I have found to my dismay that the sealed type 12 V backup battery, which costs around 2000 Sri Lankan Rupees, does not last more than a year or a half. At the moment, the e.m.f of UPS has dropped to 9 V so it does not changeover to backup mode when mains power is out. I would like to know whether I could connect a 12V small car/motorcycle battery instead ( of course to be kept outside the UPS housing). These type of batteries are durable, robust and can also be recharged easily.

What's the brand of your UPS? These days it is not easy find a good UPS in Sri Lanka. The problem is computer vendors don't know anything about the technical side of the units. They only know the price :D

However I faced lots of problems personally as you with several brands of UPSs. And the problem you have is very common. I'm sure there is a problem with your charging circuit. Need to start checking with relays and diodes. If you a good electronic technician in your area, you could get this repaired quite easily I'm sure. If this is not possible then I agree with you we need to have a separate battery charging circuit.

Of cause you can use a car battery instead of the standard 12V / 7AHrs. You can build your own charger. See this post https://robot.lk/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=1338. If you could override the charging circuit of the UPS, you can run this charger at the same time.

I bought a UPS from Abans and their service is good. And I think if I buy computer products in Sri Lanka, the best place is Abans and Metropolitian. None other provide good after service. Think before Buy.

Silicon, Can you please recommend Abans and Metropolitan in Buy Guide section with respect to product/model number, etc...
Lets encourage people to come out and express their ideas and views to improve the ethics in technology business in Sri Lanka.

What I see is, it is under few businessmen who don't know anything about the technology side of the business at the moment. They simple bring the cheapest motherboard, hard disk, class C processors, etc... from Singapore and people have either fewer or mostly NO option to buy what they want. They use to call warranty for repair services. :D

We need more and more people for our admin team. We are a set of engineers who see a passion in sharing what we know. We value sharing knowledge and help each other while working on day to day schedules. Can you please take over this section and maintain it? Lets encourage people to submit scanned copies of invoices, service notes, photos of service guys, etc... and share their experience. If you like, I'll add you to Support Team of ROBOT.LK.
