I received this error few years ago after an upgrade to a later version. I then installed an older version and it worked.
Can you try an older version and see whether it gives you the same error?

Did you attempt repair options in windows live messenger. Seems like some proxy issue. Try googling the error code. 80072efd

Can you try this one.

Open a run window by clicking start, then run. Now, type the following command and press enter:

Code: Select all

regsvr32 softpub.dll Wintrust.dll Initpki.dll Rsaenh.dll Mssip32.dll Cryptdlg.dll
If you use Windows XP you should open another run window after running the previous commands then type the following command:

Code: Select all

regsvr32 Dssenh.dll Gpkcsp.dll Slbcsp.dll Sccbase.dll

I have installed Windows Live Messenger myself to see whether there is any common problem. It worked like a charm ;) So I have noway to simulate the issue. How if you try something like Trilian which supports MSN messenger protocol. Also, I heard you can contact your MSN friends through Yahoo messenger now. But I didn't try it myself.
