Creative Digital Products: Are They Profitable?

Post by Neo » Mon Sep 28, 2009 6:05 am

Thanks the Internet, average people have the opportunity to become authors, musicians and even video game designers. And, they can even make money if they decide to distribute their work in the form of a digital product… an ebook, music CD or gaming DVD. Yet, one does have to ask the question, is there a potential to earn a full-time living with a creative digital product, especially when demand seems to be for digital products that are informative.

Well, when it comes to Internet marketing, you will have to think outside of the box when promoting creative digital products. For example, say you wrote an ebook that serves as a romance novel. Of course, you can try to promote the ebook on any keyword related to “romance novel”, but you won't find as many niches. And the few you do find will be for novels that are given away for free.

So, you will want to try to focus on keywords where people are already in the mindset to buy. Start a blog on romance books and provide reviews on novels that you know people are purchasing. At the top portion of your blog include a banner that leads the reader to your romance ebook. Make sure it's enticing… including a picture of people kissing as well as a captivating headline. If you can price your book really cheap, (like $1 or so), you may want to include that in the ad as well.

The same approach can be used for other types of creative digital products, whether they are music CDs or gaming DVDs. However, remember that as a no-name, you have to provide extra incentive for people to buy your work. With informative digital products, this doesn't matter as much because people care more about the information you're providing. If your ad seems to indicate your digital product will meet their needs, they will be more likely to buy from you.

Yet, with creative digital products, people are looking to be entertained. They know they will get a good read from Danielle Steel or a good game from Electronic Arts, but what can they get from you? It doesn't help that there are hundreds of people out there that will distribute their work for free. Why would they buy from you when they could just download free digital products?

This is where your marketing has to come into play. You must make your digital product so enticing that people are one step away from purchasing the item. Seal the deal by offering a very low price. If an ad is interesting enough, some people will buy just out of curiosity. But if the item is overpriced, they will lose interest.

In conclusion, it is possible to make money with creative digital products. However, you will have to work a little harder because the market is totally different. But once you learn the secrets behind marketing in general, you'll be able to make money while letting others see your creative vision.
