Problem with Samsung DVD Writer

Post by Nipuna » Fri Aug 19, 2011 8:06 pm

Hi

There is a problem with my Samsung DVD writer. I bought it about 6 months ago.

Problem is some times It can't recognize CD DVD or any. But I can see it in My Computer and When I press Eject button tray comes out. And when I insert a CD or DVD windows mouse pointer indicates that there is a CD in the drive but I can't see there is a CD in the drive only normal drive icon can be seen.

So I connected the SATA cable of DVD writer to another port then it worked, then after some days the problem started again. So I removed and replugged the cable again then worked for some more days. Today it started again, And after bending and shaking the cable little it worked again.

I think this is a problem with the cable, So I checked it with multimeter but couldn't find any problem. And this problem comes randomly. So I think it can't find with multimeter because there must be a loose connection or something.

By the way I gave money to a friend of mine to bring me a cable.

Do you think is this the problem?

Yes, cable can probably be the problem. However, if you can check with Ubuntu (I know you have it installed) you can confirm that is a hardware problem.

Samsung is one of my not-recommended brands for HDDs, mobiles and optical drives. :D
I am owning a Asus DRW-1814BL drive. It's really rock-solid. Never had a problem with for 4 years now. One of my friends had that crazy tray problem. The tray comes out suddenly while reading a disc and it is so annoying. :D .

I have Sony Combo drive and it's about 3 years old and still works almost well :D . It has not recognizing a Blank DVD problem. But it did before.

But even I have Samsung HDD it is almost same as my combo drive and it work well.

Changed the cable but still same no luck :(

Its name is Samsung. But in device manager it says this. (I think Samsung and Sharp both make these ODDs together )

TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S243D

I even couldn't find the firmware to update my drive.

By the way. I tried cable plugging into 2 port but no luck. Worked one or two times, Then began that error again. I can't figure out what the heck this is :x
