Green Card

Post by Nipuna » Wed Oct 05, 2011 1:03 pm

Hello.

Me and my cousin applied green card today from this link https://www.dvlottery.state.gov/ (Actually I applied for both of us ;) I filled his application and mine also because he is at school now so I did it for him :) )

Not sure will we win or not :)

What do you think of it(I mean about applying green card ;) )?

I like everyone's ideas.

Thanks

Thanks for sharing the link. However I discorage 'lottery' like thing, because it's a waste
of money and winning chances are very law.

however , Hoping you best of luck! but believe me chance of winning are very less. The
reality behind every lottery and what for they designed.

Green card is a type of US VISA given to 50,000 people every year. The computerised selection process has an algorithm which selects most suitable 50,000 candidates out of a list of millions based on qualifications, experience, field of work, etc... So it is not easy to get selected to that 50,000. However once you are selected, you will be recommended to a suitable job based on your qualifications and within the first few years you'll be able to apply for citizenship. Most people are able to take it unless they made criminal records within those first few years. If you are not given, you will have to come back to your motherland in few years.

I know 100s of green card holders who were able to migrate to USA, working on good jobs and living a luxury life. Starting salary for a software engineer in USA would be around $60,000 a year. This is nearly thrice the salary of a an experienced senior software engineer in Sri Lanka. Living cost is about $2000 per person (to live a good life) so you'll be able to buy a nice house and a brand new card in just a few years.

I think you will now understand why it is named as a lottery. It is obviously a chance to have a luxury life. However the life is not always easy there. People are like machines. They just run all the time. It's a 24/7 busy world mostly. Those who like to live a luxury life with a nice house, brand new car in a short period of time, green card is a very good option. However they will miss lots of things as well. They will have to forget their parents, friends, relations, green grass of home, etc... Some guys I know came to SL to participate their mother or father's funeral. Some of them felt it is a bad decision they have taken. But it's not unexpected. They just knew a luxury life in a foreign country means forgetting about those as well.

I'm not discouraging you guys in any mean. But just note that this is reality and I have experience on this.

For those who are satisfied with normal life in Sri Lanka (no country is like motherland) can live a peaceful life here with parents, friends, etc....

Thanks for the reply.

I have no so many expectations about this, Just applied.

Yes, I agree there is no place like motherland. But I like to visit USA even for a day to fell how is it.

And if I could go there I like to get my family there too, So I will get them to US too.

Just did this to test and to know about it.

I am happy even I couldn't go there, And I know, once I could get a good job then I can visit US in vacations.

So no sad feelings :)

No man , this is not discouraging ! discourage about if that's a lottery, finally I also found this is lottery
type that is free.

The salary rates are changing to state to state. state like TX which is down it's wost than even sudan.
Talking about education is also the same, some universities provide good quality skills with industry
experience when you graduated , but some are just taking your money.

And ppl are different , so if you lucky somehow to won it , speak less , listen more ! learn their culture,
but you don't follow it[it's American dream, democracy it your right],make yourself important [that's
only way to earn money there, increase your demand ,you also just a selling good there ,no public
free hospitals and education :P those things are nonsense there], make friends but don't even think to
follow them. These things have to be mentioned , there is a high percentage of Drug/SEX/alcohol in
USA. But the good news is you still have the freedom to live as you want. Unlike here you don't have to
say "Please leave me alone" ,"just leave me alone" works fine there because more ppl respect the
American Freedom concept. So addict to drug is not a necessary thing either no-one is forcing or
will be offense with you if you not.

Many Sinhalese are doing business/work/study/living in that beautiful country. Americans are in general
strong and proud ppl. And they have good hostility. But there is a red alert on drugs/sex/alcohol there.
Just don't try to change those ppl, just ignore the bad side. This is clearly nothing to discouraged ,because
you have your freedom to choose there, and knowledge about their culture is the weapon.

many Sinhalese are working there and made Sri Lankan reputation in that part of the world.
I just browse google for Compiler theory good lecture and what I found a Sinhalese professor
named 'Saman Amarasinghe' is doing that teaching that course,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-bpyDgBxAo

so no discouraging you all, pls don't misunderstood. But know and study about the country and
everything have a bad side too. so knowing about their culture is your weapon.
